Hi yicheng, thank you for sharing your blog. After i read your blog, i think you have very deep thoughts on the ethnical concerns about AI tools. Your points rightly identifies ethical concerns surrounding the private issue while using AI tools, which is a paramount concern, considering the majority of the data collections which are processed in AI systems.

Module 5: advanced multimedia tools

In this module, we discover AI tools, which is a very interesting topic compare to the others. As known that AI tools are intelligence and advanced of the year, such as Chatgpt or AI art. This technology affects a variety of fields, from creative arts or literature research. However, in this module, I decided to try use Stable Diffusion to see how it works.

Generative AI tools

In this module, it gives us an opportunity to generate contents by using AI tools. Generating text has already been used a lot, then i decided to explore AI tools by generating images. I am not very familiar with image generating tools, so i would give a try for it.

After the generation of the image, the tool had created a very realistic image, which is beyond my expectations. For this image generating tool, you only need to input one key word and then select the style, there are about 30 styles we can choose, the one i picked was sai-3d model, the result will take about 1 minute.

In recent years, Ai tools had significant progress and they have improved in all of the variety of fields. AI has become more accurate and efficient in generating images, when you input any key word, the tool will come out with a accurate image. In addition, AI tools become easier to access and allow the individuals to use AI as a daily life tools, which can be increase their effectiveness of all the areas in life. The Stable Diffusion tool could be a great tool for the designers and architect to assist their work and become more productive.

From this module, I also explored the history of AI tools from the past years, the invention of AI can be traced back to the 1950s, the early efforts focused on symbolic AI, using rules and logical reasoning to solve the problems. So, in this era, the AI systems program had been emerged (Rockwell Anyoha, 2017). Until now, the modern AI tools had become advanced and intelligence through the long pathway, even in the future, AI could be more advanced.

By investigating AI tools, I found out the AI has the potential to significantly become more investigative process. In Stable Diffusion, the process of generation was quick, saved time then the result was perfect. As development of the technology, i personally believe the Ai tools would make more progresses in the future years.

Reflection questions:

What ethical concerns do you have (or not have) about the use of some of these tools?

The ethical concerns about use of some of these tools would be about the interaction of learning about privacy. Nowadays, Chatgpt is often used at the colleges, which provides a chance for students to use for any academic purposes. AI is the one that students can use to cheat on their assignments or exams, it generates the answer for them but the answer is not always make sense, such as the example questions in this module, “who are the 2 black US presidents?”. ChatGpt generated the answer, however, the answer provided was not correct. From that, we can tell that even we all know AI tools are intelligence but they are only generating languages, not gathering the accurate information.

AI ethnical concerns is also related to privacy, the privacy concerns are due to the date collections and processed by the AI systems, which increases the issues about data protection, and other potential problems. In this situation, the regulations and framework should regulate the development and reduce these privacy risks while the development of AI tools.

What tools did you find useful in your explorations this week and how did you use them? Which ones were not useful?

The most useful AI tools in this week would be the image generation tools, the advantages of this tool have creative process and visual content creation. It can generate high-quality images by inputing the prompt and selecting the styles, it saves time and increase the productivities to create images of artwork or any designs. The accessibility of image generating AI are more flexible to create customized content, which are important for artists or designers to save time and effort at work. The ones were not useful would be text generating tools, even sometimes we use it to get inspirations or gathering ideas, however, the answer which text generation tools are not always accurate, it can be a supportive tool but cannot always rely on.

Where do you think these tools will be in their evolution in 2-3 years’ time?

In the next 2-3 years, the tools for design such as DALL-E2 and other image generation tools are likely to make more advances, these tools are definitely becoming more sophisticated and capable of producing more realistic content. However, we have to agree that AI tools are more time efficiency, but it still not be able to taking over humans. For all the designers or artists, they probably use this tool for assistance purpose but it could not be fully replace the designers or artists. As the improvement of technology in the next 2-3 years, the AI would be a more helpful tool for them but not replacing them.

Module 4:principles of learning design and active learning

In the module we learned this week, we learned some common principles from the instructional design, also learned some active learning. There is a tool called H5P learning and i have never used it before, which was new experiences for me. However, in this module, I received more knowledge from active learning and the H5P website.

H5P

I created some economic true/false definition questions based on my major. While i was using this website, the instruction is clear and the is user-friendly, easy to create by steps. The available content types is very impressive, which offers many types of options, such as multiple choice and matching questions. This tool is very useful for active learning, while we are studying, a quiz tool is appears to be important to test our knowledges, H5P can be one for active learning.

As an economic major student, sometimes we are messing up the definition for those professional vocabularies, to memorize those definitions, I personally would test myself with true/false questions to memorize those terms. The h5p quiz is also a good method for those economic beginners, to do the quiz and test the knowledge.

Reflection questions for module 4

What was your experience of trying out H5P? Which of the activities do you think you would make most use of in your teaching context and what would you use them to do? Which ones do you think require the most resources to create?

My experiences of trying out h5p was very interesting. As i have never used this tool in the past, so the first time using it which surprised me. This tool allows us to create learning content, such as the quizzes, it is very creative also offers a variety types of activities by making the quiz. The steps of creating the quiz on h5p was going well and the instructions are clear.

I think i would make most use of teaching depends on different subjects. If it is language learning, making flashcards would be very helpful than other activities. The flashcard quiz is often used by my previous language teachers as well, it can train the memorizations of vocabularies. If it is a course such as business or economic, using true/false or multiple choices is better, because it is engaging the learners to define and recall the definitions for those professional terms and phrases. However, it is totally depends on the subjects and learning styles of each individuals.

create graphs would be the one require the most resources to create, this part requires lots of data and charts to complete. This one also requires more time and effort, which is a challenge for some of the learners.

Lesson plan

My lesson plan would be about supply and demand in the markets. This lesson is designed for the economic beginners, it is a topic from microeconomics.

Overview

Microeconomics is the study of individual and business economic activity. The content is focusing on those two terms, supply and demand. This term is from microeconomic, they are the common economic model of price determination, buying volume and production level in the markets.

Lesson objective

At the end of this lesson, the learners will learned:

-Define the laws of supply and demand

-identify the factors which affects supply and demand in the markets

-Solve supply and demand functions and then be able to solve market equilibrium after practice supply and demand functions

-understand the market structures to real world scenarios

content

  • the learners are expected to understand the relationship of supply and demand, supply and demand analysis can be applied to markets for final goods and services, as known as to markets for labour, capital and other factors of production.
  • Some basic words such as price, sellers and buyers. Those are known as the factors which affects and interacts the supply and demand in the markets. Also, if there is any changes in any of these determinations, which can lead the shifts in supply and demands curves and as well as the overall market incomes.
  • https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/career-development/how-to-calculate-equilibrium-price. The link can be able to access the full process of finding the market equilibrium and the formulas are provided. The supply and demand functions are demonstrated as equations which shows the relationship between each other. The solve the market equilibrium, it is very simple, make the supply and demand equations to equal to each other, and will get the result.
  • To analyze the market structures in real world by learning through the supply and demand, there are lots of characteristics to remember. The dynamics of supply and demand is the key for real world scenarios, it is not like in the textbook, the market and prices are always changing, and government’s regulations are regulating the market as well.

Applications

During the applications, the learners should be able to solve the supply and demand equations and analyze the shifts of the graphs. The learners should be able to understand more concepts through the real world scenarios, as they know there are more influences are regulations.

To test the knowledge, the learners are expecting to explain the relationship and laws between supply and demand, also should be able to further understand the market structures.

Reflections

For the reflections, the learners are expecting to write some predictions of the future trends of the market based on supply-demand and economic knowledge. This part can be a good start point for their economic perspectives and practice analyzations in economy.

To do

-read the concepts of the terms in economic

-remember the definitions

-write a short paragraph to describe the market structures

Hi yicheng, thank you for sharing your blog.

I like reading your module 3 blog post. You did a good story and it sounds very compelling, impactful although it is short and simple. The narrative and characters are vivid and your details are provided through the board you created on Twine. You used good techniques to engaged the audience , it was well-crafted and also created an emotional connection with the audience as well. The storytelling you made was impressive and it also related to lots of people’s personal experiences as well.

Module 3 blog

In this module, the storytelling is a way of learning, a meaningful learning experiences with a compelling story. Although it is a simple and short story, more concepts and details were learned through this module, it is a good chance to share some common experiences among other students, which was my inspiration came from.

By using Twine as a storytelling board, I used an exam day as the story’s background and break them down into several branches and scenes. In this way, readers can easily see and read through the story step by step through this useful tool. Here is a screenshot of the story I created on Twine:

here is my script:

introduction: an exam day, in the morning, you feel so anxious.

on the way to school: everything’s normal but you still don’t feel confident.

study for awhile: you seat at a cornet at the library, decide to study

after review: you feel slightly better after the review, the exam is coming soon.

Writing the exam: still feel anxious while writing the exam

Finish: after 1 hour, the exam is done.

Back home: finally, your stress is released.

reflection questions: Describe a meaningful learning experience that started with a story that you heard. What made it impactful for you? What senses did it appeal to? Did you recognize any of the storytelling techniques reviewed this week?

A meaningful learning experiences that started with my story, that always recall my students’ experiences at school, absolutely all the students experience exams. As a student, who are preparing the upcoming exam with nervousness, despite the nerves feeling before the exam start, but we always have to overcome this emotion. The story made it impactful for me, this experiences are not only relevant for me, and all other students as well.

The story I created which captured the anxiety associated with the exams and provide a process about manage stress and also the self doubt before exam begins. The emotions we are having before the exam is essential, we could do the best to remove the anxiety before exam. However, the importance of mindfulness is a significant impact when we are dealing with any academic challenges, such as exams. The story can appeal to some senses, such as the visual and emotional senses. During the exam period, the atmosphere and can evoke the emotions such as nervousness, and stress release after completing an exam.

Edci 337 assignment 2 video for a learning purpose

Through the educational video, it was my chance to gain more experiences that can challenged for my creativity and technical skills. In this assignment, the educational video was a key lesson that I could combined some important concepts from the previous modules we learned in the past days. The content I chose for my video was to teach how to wear contact lens, and this decision was also a chance to use my life experiences to finish this assignment.

Here is the link for my video:

Reflection questions:

What is the learning purpose of your video?

The learning purpose of this video is focus on how to wear contact lenses, to provide comprehensive and clear instructions for the people who are first-time contact lenses wearers or those people who need a proper usage process. This video is to give the people who are seeking help with contact lens, when i was trying to wear my lens for the first time, i had difficulties to put it on, then i would help and also ensure that they understand the caring process.

Which of the principles we’ve covered this term (e.g., Mayer/Universal Design for Learning/Cognitive Load Theory) did you incorporate into your design and why?

In my video, I connected my content with one of Mayer’s cognitive load theory, modality. For this concept, the video displays a multimedia format that suits the content, and it is effective to represents graphics and structure of the content i demonstrated through the video. The modality principle that can be an important representation for the learners to gain more learning experiences and make it easier for the learners, which emphasize the importance of thoughtful multimedia integration to ensure that learners are understanding the materials and contents.

limited capacity from Mayer’s cognitive load theory, this concept is being used in the video, the information our brains received is limited, which means the ability of the amount of information we receive should not over the limit.

Also, the signaling principle was the one i incorporated into my video. In the video, i had some clips and combined them together into a full video, this method can make the video in a proper duration and clear structured. Use the subheadings is the key for the learners, to save their time and receive the information effectively.

What was challenging about capturing your own video?

In this video assignment, one of the challenges i encountered was the video quality issue. When i was shooting the video, sometimes the camera was not focus which made the video become very blurry, so i had to redo it to ensure the quality was in good condition. My hand should not shake, should always focus to make a good video. The another challenge i encountered would be speaking while i was filming, i had to memorize the script and demonstrated the process at the same time, however, those are the only problems i’ve had during the assignment.

What did you find easiest?

The easiest part of this video assignment would be the script writing, the preparation of the items i need in the video. I was feeling confident about those two things.

How would you approach capturing video differently next time?

In the next video assignment, i would spend more time on the video structure and make it more clear. The clear structure would create a better content and better visual demonstration than this time. Also, i will ensure that i show myself more in the video, to record a better quality video assignment.

Script

First: Hello everyone, this is my edci 337 assignment.  today I’m teaching you guys how to wear contact lenses.

second: so, the first step is to your hands, make sure your hands are clean and dry.

third: and, wipe our hands with the paper towel

fourth: after i washed my hands, the next step is to get your lenses ready, check the lens is in good condition or not.

Fifth: so we open it, you see the lens is not damaged, so we can use it.

Sixth: Then use the mirror to help you to see what you are doing

Seventh: right now we are ready to insert the lens into our eye, so let’s take it out.

Eighth: blink a few times to feel it’s good or not

Ninth: final step, if there’s any air bubbles under the lens, gently move the lens with your finger, like this to remove the air bubbles. We are done for wearing the contact lenses, we can repeat the same steps for the other eye. Thank you for watching.

hi jinyi,

thank you for sharing your blog

In your blog, your response to the questions, you demonstrated a thoughtful approach to creating accessible infographics using text-to-speech tools. Your experiences with Microsoft Azure Text-to-Speech and considerations for a speech styles highlighted the impact of speech choices on information absorption and recognize that speech choices can vary from person to person. Your response of the inclusive design principles used to create infographics, such as visual consistency, demonstrated your strong idea of effective graphic design. In addition, your suggestions for making infographics easier for visually impaired learners, such as optimizing text readability and implementing text-to-speech tools, reveal a clear understanding of inclusive design principles. Overall, your responses reflect a comprehensive approach to creating easily accessible and engaging learning materials tailored to the needs of different audiences.

Hi jinyi, thank you for sharing you blog 1 post.

I totally agree that effective modalities can be more challenging in implementation. Ensuring that the signal is not overwhelming but prominent enough to direct the audience’s attention requires careful planning and execution. Balancing auditory and visual elements also requires a thoughtful approach to creating a comprehensive learning experience.
Your focus on coherence and redundancy highlights your focus on detail. These principles, if you could significantly improve the clarity and understanding of what was proposed. Organizing information in a coordinated and avoiding unnecessary redundancy are indeed essential elements of effective communication.
Overall, you are on the right track and delivering high quanlity content in the blog and screencast

blog #2

In module 2, “design principles for effective and accessible multimedia, this topic had deeply investigated Mayer’s principles into the effectiveness, engagement, and all the learning materials. The analysis the impact visual on several ways, such as learning and the learning environment. Through this module, i will be able to create more educational materials that are not only appealing and also creating an inclusive learning environment for all the principles.

What did you find when you ran the WAVE accessibility report on your blog post(s)? What did you expect and what was surprising? Is there anything you will do differently going forward?

here is the screen capture of the WAVE tool, the result demonstrates that i got 12 contrast errors, 2 alerts, 7 features, 19 structural elements, 8 aria and zero errors. By all these issues, i should made my site become more inclusive. When i was exploring the WAVE website, the result showed that i received zero errors, which was surprising.

What role do you think media and multimedia can play in a learning environment designed with UDL guidelines in mind? Which of the promising practices for text, images and video are in alignment with these guidelines?

media and multimedia elements are playing an important role in a learning environment, it designed according to the learning design guidelines and UDL as well. In this concept, various forms of media are known as text, images, and video. In all of these forms, the learners can be able to meet all their needs of several different learning styles and abilities. For example, text is one of the forms, which provided a good platform for the learners to access content and find a way to suit their learning style.

What does inclusive design mean to you?

“The design of mainstream products and/or services that are accessible to, and usable by, as many people as reasonably possible … without the need for special adaptation or specialised design. â€ť This quote is from the British standards institute, which explained the definition of this term.

In my point of view, the inclusive design means a deep commitment to explore benefits from the competition or from the environment. This includes creating environment where diversity cannot be recognized. However, the inclusive design is describing how to create products, and a better learning environment, it can involve accessibility, education and learning concepts for all of the people. This is not only focusing on the learning, also focusing on meet the needs of all the learners. The inclusive design is also about adapting inclusive design patterns, which is related to Interactive and Multimedia, this allows individuals with different abilities, it includes the features such as video subtitles and texts, to perceive and understanding the content.

In addition, the inclusive design principles in the Interactive and Multimedia environments, the learners can create more experiences that can be able to meet all the basic needs and a chance that belonging and engagement among different style learners.

Graphic design is inherently visual – what additions or modifications could you make to ensure that learners with visual impairments have access to the same information in an infographic in an online setting?

First, it is important to provide a clear and concise alternative text descriptions of all the visual elements in the infographic. These descriptions should create more perceived informations in the infographic, so when the learners with visual impairment are reading the screen, they can clearly see the content as all the other learners. Also, use the descriptive alternative text to make sure the learners can be able to access the key concepts and principles, and the date which are representing in the infographic. Combining the tactile graphics, raised the surfaces to demonstrates the different elements and it can also improve the accessibility for the visual impairments learners, in this way, the detailed structured infographics, by this method, the visual impairments learners can also access the informations delivered.

Edci 337 blog 1

Hello everyone, this is Yudan Zhang. Today i am introducing you guys a tool called Canva. This app is well known as a presentation creating app, it is free and you can access various templates if you need to do a presentation or slides.

Of all the principles of Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning we looked at in this module, which seem most intuitive to you? Which ones surprised you?

Canva clearly outlines what people can learn from multimedia presentations. Also it is a way to learn more through the multimedia principles. While i was using this app for my course assignments, it was very intuitive in the app, the platform combines the text, images and other elements together, also allow the users to create visually appealing presentations, infographics and moreover. This is a very effective way for learning and understanding.

Who did you imagine as the audience for this screencast? How did that impact your design choices?

The audience for this screencast are basically learners, the friendly templates and simple pages, which are very helpful for presentation beginners. If you are doing a group work, share the Canva link with group mates, it allows several users to edit the slide. Anyway, Canva’s versatility makes all the users adaptable to various design choices, enabling to create various and creative templates for the work.
